About Nozawa Onsen

Nozawa Onsen is one of the classic ski resorts in Japan, which has expanded over a 70 year period into one of the largest ski areas in the country servicing more than 50 kilometers of trails. Nozawa ranks amongst one of the best ski resorts in Japan with an excellent course layout and great selection of runs offering great skiing and snowboarding experiences for beginners right through to the most advanced. From the top of Nozawa Onsen’s breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding national parks and the Japan Alps are to be had.
The village has a great sense of tradition and feeling of Japanese spirit with beautiful old streets and a bustling village full of history, culture and festivals. The village is also famous for its public hot-springs, with more than 30 springs located throughout the resort. On January 15th of every year, one of the most famous fire festivals in Japan is held in Nozawa Onsen which is truly an amazing spectacle.

Where is Nozawa Onsen?

Nozawa Onsen is located in the Nagano region of Japan. It can be reached by the bullet train from Tokyo to the nearby Iyama Station. From Iyama it is a short taxi ride to the Nozawa Onsen village.

The Nozawa Onsen Fire Festival - 15 January

The Nozawa Fire Festival, also called the “Nozawa Onsen Dosojin Matsuri” is a powerful and energetic winter festival in Japan featuring the awesome combination of snow, sake and fire. Dating back to 1863, the Nozawa Fire Festival is one of Japan’s three most famous fire festivals. The festival is held annually to pray for health, good fortune and an abundant harvest in the coming year. The annual event on 15 January is extremely popular and accommodation books out up to 10 months in advance. If you want to visit Nozawa over the period of the festival, we recommend booking your ski holiday early!
