So while Queenstown is quite rightfully known as the ‘Adventure Capital of the World’ it has sooooo much more than that to offer! The fact that it is surrounded by stunning, picturesque natural environment means it has the perfect backdrop for slowing down and just enjoying life. So when your legs have had enough skiing and you want to take it easy, here are our pick of the best, relaxing, chilled out things to do in (or near) Queenstown.
1. Onsen Hot Pools
Enjoy panoramic views as you relax from your own cedar lined hot tub. Try the new outdoor onsen – infused with 100% Earth Minerals, rich in magnesium to naturally detoxify the body and mind, these mineral pools help to provide natural relief for muscular complaints. Or perhaps book the ‘Serenity Soak and Spa’ which combines a 45 minute soak in a private hot tub on your own deck overlooking the Shotover River followed by a face or body treatment of your choice in the day spa. Make sure you book in advance for all experiences as they do book out!
2. Skyline Gondola
Rising from the town of Queenstown is the Skyline Gondola. It is the steepest cable car in the Southern Hemisphere and takes you 450m above Queenstown to the top of Bob’s Peak. Once up there enjoy 220 degree panoramic views of the surrounding mountains including Coronet Peak and the Remarkables, and of course Queenstown and Lake Wakatipu. While there enjoy a drink at the bar, a delicious buffet lunch or dinner at the Stratosphere Restaurant (RSL Club Buffet this is not!) or just take in the view. In case you do need a little thrill – the Luge is a lot of fun.
3. TSS Earnslaw Cruise
The best way to immerse yourself in the surrounds of Queenstown is a cruise aboard a coal fired steamship. The leisurely 90 minute cruise across Lake Wakatipu showcases some of Queenstown’s spectacular alpine scenery while offering you plenty of time to explore a piece of Queenstown’s living history – the over one hundred year-old TSS Earnslaw. Inside a visit to the engine room reveals the giant steam engines at work. Close by you’ll be able to view the collection of historical photos in our mini-museum, check out the bridge and even join a sing-along with the pianist. Or, if you’d rather, kick back and enjoy a wine or beer or some café food at the onboard cafe.
